JOHN J. LEGERE
Chief Executive Director
Global Crossing Ltd.
JOHN J. LEGERE is a telecommunications visionary who has been at the
forefront of the industry, holding a number of pivotal positions over
two decades of revolutionary change.
As chief executive officer of Global Crossing Ltd. since October
2001, John steered the company from its entrepreneurial roots to its
current operational focus with the completion of the world¡s first
integrated global IP-based network. He kept Global Crossing¡s network,
customer base and employees intact through 681 days of restructuring,
emerging on December 9, 2003, with a streamlined cost structure, improved
customer satisfaction scores and near-perfect network operations. The
company is now a leading provider of IP services worldwide.
At AT&T, where John began his telecommunications career, he rose
rapidly through the ranks to become one of the telecom giant¡s youngest
officers. He served as head of global strategy and business development
and led the company¡s expansion in Asia as president and chief executive
officer of AT&T Asia/Pacific from April 1994 to November 1997. From
1997 to 1998, he was president of worldwide outsourcing at AT&T Solutions,
the unit that provided customized support to the company¡s largest
customers.
From AT&T, John moved to Dell Computer Corporation, spearheading
its expansion in Asia so successfully as president of Asia/Pacific
from 1998 until February 2000, that he was also named president for
Dell's operations in Europe, the Middle East and Africa, as well. He
then took on the challenge of president and chief executive officer
of Asia Global Crossing from February 2000 until January 2002, building
a new company from scratch, conducting its successful initial public
offering and overseeing construction of its leading-edge, fiber-optic
network before taking the top spot at Global Crossing.
A Massachusetts native, John received a bachelor's degree in Business
Administration from the University of Massachusetts; a Master of Business
Administration degree from Fairleigh Dickinson University; and a master's
degree in Science as an Alfred P. Sloan Fellow at the Massachusetts
Institute of Technology. He also attended the Harvard Business School
Management Development Program in 1989, and has been a member of the
corporate advisory board of the School of Business and Management,
Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, and the Government
Relations Committee of the American Chamber of Commerce, Hong Kong.
John was a nationally competitive runner in college and post college,
and still competes, and wins, in Corporate Challenge events with fellow
employees around the world to promote community and team spirit. In
addition, in 2004, he completed the Boston Marathon as a member of
the Dana-Farber Marathon Challenge team, raising $85,000 for the charity
to help fight cancer.
