Dear Members:
Advisory Council Chairman Jay Gillette invited me
to chair a Task Force to examine strategies for the
long-term sustainability of PTC as an organization.
I accepted Jay's invitation and am working with Co-Chairman
Ichiro Shoji, Managing Director of Japan's Research
Institute of Telecommunications and Economics. Task
Force members include: Sallye Clark, John Hibbard,
Mark Lopianowski, Maui Sanford and Kai Yuan Zhen. You
too can join in our deliberations as a "Consulting
Advisor."
This Task Force represents a serious effort to examine
ways to enhance PTC's value proposition to its Members.
Additionally the Task Force has under consideration
ways to enhance the visibility, importance and attractiveness
of the annual and mid-year conferences with an eye
toward shoring up PTC's financial viability.
Because of its visibility and financial importance
to the sustainability of PTC, the annual conference
has triggered close examination. The best way to achieve
a robust positive return lies in making the annual
conference as John Hibbard stated a "must attend" event.
Generally we should strive to make the substantive
content addressed in sessions, relevant, current and
thought provoking. Likewise we should strive to attract
both senior and middle management representatives from
major ICT constituencies.
The Task Force appreciates the need for better promotion
of what PTC has to offer. The special blend of participants
and substantive content make PTC's conferences quite
different from the major ICT trade shows such as SUPERCOMM.
Additionally, the Task Force appreciates the need for
more expansive outreach with traditional constituencies,
which have lagged in attendance, and new target participants
such as venture capitalist, ICT manufacturers, Internet
content creators and service providers, incumbent local
exchange carriers, foundations and Chinese ventures.
The Task Force will present a formal
report to the Board of Governors in January.
Mahalo,
Robert Frieden

PTC Sustainability Task Force
Executive Director's Corner
PTC: Where Innovation Meets Aloha
During my first six months as executive director of
PTC I have had the opportunity to travel thousands
of miles and to meet many of our members in North America
and Asia. Along the way I have been constantly challenged
to mentally integrate two reactions that I get when
I mention I am representing PTC (not counting: "Boy
- living in Hawaii. How did you pull that off?")
Reaction 1: Wow, PTC is a great organization and your
annual conference in January is really terrific.
Reaction 2: Oh, Hawaii in January must be really great,
but our organization would never approve of a "business" trip
to Hawaii – hah, hah, hah.
I have been told that some U.S. government officials
who make presentations at conferences in Hawaii schedule
their talks so they can arrive and depart on the same
day, avoiding an expense report with an overnight stay
in Hawaii.
As we plan PTC's 28th consecutive annual
conference (15 – 18 January 2006) at the Hilton
Hawaiian Village Beach Resort and Spa, and I work with
the Board of Governors to more carefully define our
mission and vision, I am constantly challenged to briefly
state our purpose and value. I like to say that we
help our members be successful at their primary endeavors – commercial
or non-commercial – while enabling them to make
a difference in the health, safety, and quality of
life of the people of the Pacific Hemisphere. But that
isn't very memorable.
So what are we all about? Why do an average
of over 1,000 professionals representing telecommunications
and ICT firms, governments, regulatory bodies, academia,
scientists, engineers, law firms, investment groups,
and consultancies, gather like swallows every January
in Honolulu, Hawaii? I must say, PTC is the most diverse
group of people I've ever seen in one professional
organization.
Yes, Hawaii is beautiful and the weather is usually
quite nice. Yes, you can conduct business and NEVER
put on a coat and tie! But what's the secret that brings
all these people back every year? Some say it is the
spirit of Aloha; a very real but intangible mood and
attitude that almost everyone senses when they come
to Hawaii; a friendly spirit that is kind, gentle,
happy, honest, and caring. Others say it is because
they can learn, cut deals, build relationships, be
with industry leaders, and be in an environment reeking
with innovative thoughts and stimulating conversation
addressing the most important issues of the day – in
a beautiful setting.
I believe that PTC's secret is that it is an organization
like no other trade group or educational society; a
monumentally diverse group that challenges and stimulates
itself to learn, to see trends, to be creative, to
solve problems, and to leave the world a better place
than when we came into it. PTC is: "Where Innovation
Meets Aloha."

Intelligent Community of the Year
ICF Accepting Nominations from Communities
for Intelligent Community of the Year Award
On August 22, the Intelligent Community Forum (ICF)
will begin accepting nominations for its annual Top
Seven Intelligent Communities of the Year listing.
We believe that your community may be a prospective
candidate for the 2006 list, and we cordially invite
you to submit a nomination form.
The Intelligent Community Forum has been presenting
its Top Seven list since 2000. Once again, the 2006
Top Seven will be announced at the Pacific Telecommunications
Council's January conference in Honolulu, Hawaii, which
attracts thousands of private and public-sector attendees
each year to explore the intersection between telecommunications
and development. From our Top Seven, one community
will be named Intelligent Community
of the Year at our annual conference, in June
2006, in New York.
About the Intelligent Community Forum
ICF is a think-tank that confuses on the role
of broadband communications in economic development by
communities large and small, in both industrial and developing
nations. We live today in what ICF calls the "broadband
economy," where –
The old competitive advantages of location and natural
resources have lost their power to create jobs
Every employee is in wage and skill competition with
people in similar industries worldwide
Every community is in competition with communities
around the globe – but also has the power to
access distant markets for its products and services
"Intelligent Communities" are ones that accept the
challenges of the broadband economy and work to build
a local economy that can thrive within it. It takes
more than "being wired" – it requires smart government
policy and strong public-private collaboration. It
involves the creation of knowledge workers, innovation
in business and government, efforts to bridge the digital
divide, and strong marketing.
How to Nominate Your Community
The Top Seven list is open to cities, towns,
villages, counties or other geographic regions that
form a definable community. If your community is fighting
for a prosperous place in the broadband economy, please
watch for our upcoming announcement that nominations
are being accepted or visit our Web site at www.intelligentcommunity.org.
You will be able to download an application form from
our Web site. The deadline
for completed applications is 14 October 2005. There
is no cost to submit a nomination. A list of finalists
will be announced on 18 November 2005 and the Top Seven
will be named during PTC'06, 15 – 18 January
2006 in Honolulu
2005 PTC Mid-Year Seminar Cancelled
Due to unforeseen circumstances
PTC’s Mid-Year
Seminar has been cancelled. However, many of the session
topics are being considered for inclusion in PTC’s
28th Annual Conference – PTC ’06 to be
held 15-18 January 2006 at the Hilton Hawaiian Village
Beach Resort and Spa in Honolulu, Hawaii.
A number of
our speakers and sponsors have suggested that we
consider
organizing a one-day pre-conference workshop addressing
the role of
telecom and ICT in the all-hazard management sector.
This would allow
us to incorporate many of the important topics that
we planned to
address at the Mid-Year Seminar. If you find this
idea appealing please
let us know by emailing your thoughts to claudine@ptc.org.
Please go to www.ptc06.org for further information.
