Upcoming Elections
for PTC Board of Governors and Advisory Council
Are you interested in a leadership role
in PTC?
PTC needs well-qualified people to serve on the Board of
Governors and the Advisory Council. To help this, the
PTC Advisory Council has appointed a Succession Planning Committee
(SPC), chaired jointly by Tim Logue and Chris Vonwiller.
The SPC's functions include recruiting good candidates and
conducting PTC's elections.
Elections will be held later this year for half of the Board
of Governors (BG) and for half of the Advisory Council (AC),
more than 20 positions altogether. We urge you to begin
thinking about whether you might be able to play a role on
one of these bodies.
The BG is the principal decision-making instrument of PTC.
Its primary functions include the establishment of policy,
strategic planning, executive-level relationship-building
on behalf of PTC, corporate fundraising, and financial and
personnel oversight. Members of the BG serve two-year terms,
with half retiring each year. At least seven (7) seats
on the BG will be up for election later this year.
The AC is a high-level advisory body that consults with the
BG on issues of significance to PTC including conference topics,
high level speakers, and the establishment of critical relationships
that will advance PTC's mission and vision. AC members serve
four-year terms, with half retiring every two years.
At least 15 seats on the Advisory Council will be up for election
this year. Seats on both bodies are further grouped
by geographic regions and between member categories in order
to assure full representation of PTC's constituencies.
Please begin now to think about nominating yourself for either
the BG or the AC. Alternatively, you may know another
well-qualified person who might be nominated. We need
leaders with industry and professional experience, strong
industry relationships that can be brought to bear on PTC
agendas, integrity and judgment. Linkages to some of
PTC's newer fields of interest ("Beyond Telecom") would be
especially valuable, as would be an ability and willingness
to help guide PTC's future course.
The SPC is planning to have the elections completed by early
November. Our indicative timescale is as follows:
| Call for nominations |
Late August |
| Nominations close |
Late September |
| Voting period |
October |
| Reporting of results to members |
Early November |
Over recent years, PTC's elections have become more
open and transparent, with many new faces now playing a part
in the elected governance bodies. We want this healthy trend
to continue.
We urge you to give consideration now to nominating for either
the BG or the AC.

PTC Announces Executive Speakers Bureau
Every January thousands of telecommunications and ICT professionals
converge on Honolulu for PTC’s annual conference. In
an effort to tap and share the expertise of these executives,
PTC is creating an “Executive Speakers Bureau”
that will match up interested visiting executives with local
classrooms at the elementary, middle school, high school,
and university levels during their visit to Hawaii.
This is a “give-back” opportunity for international
experts in fields as varied as satellite communications, fiber
optic submarine cables, mobile telephony, media, regulatory
affairs, public policy, VoIP, the Internet, and the wholesale
carrier sector. It is a chance for these industries to stimulate
the minds of potential future employees and leaders by spending
time in the classroom with interested students and their teachers.
As a group of related industries, telecom and ICT industries
face the challenge to develop new talent that will lead and
innovate in the decades to come. PTC is the leading professional
organization promoting the advancement and commercial use
of information and communication technologies, services, policies,
and knowledge, to benefit its members and the people of the
Pacific Hemisphere. In this role PTC has a responsibility
to help develop the students who will become the next generation
of industry leaders. The new Executive Speakers Bureau is
a program that will bring the generations together to learn
and to share knowledge. It is a unique opportunity for PTC’s
members and supporters to make a difference in a rewarding
and enjoyable way.
A number of volunteers in the PTC Hawaii Foundation, a local
chapter of PTC, have been exploring local channels for inviting
executives into the classroom and interest on the part of
the schools and universities has been high.
If you have an interest in contributing approximately four
to five hours of your time (including local travel time) during
your visit to PTC’07: Beyond Telecom, 14-17 January
2007, to contribute to the student experience please let me
know.
Likewise, if you are planning a trip to Honolulu at another
time of the year and would like to donate some of your time
to build student enthusiasm for telecom and ICT we will attempt
to pre-match you with appropriate students and faculty so
you can address a class at the time of your visit. In cases
like this we would appreciate at least 30-days advanced notice
to allow time for coordination.
You can reach me by sending a message to stephen@ptc.org.
In this message please let me know the dates you are available
and the education level and class types (by subject matter)
that you would prefer to address.
