Dear PTC Members,

Tim Logue

The 26 December 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami are said to have slowed the planet permanently, a reflection of the magnitude of the raw energy released. In the aftermath, many of us paused to reflect upon the widespread human suffering and the fragility of life on our planet. As professionals in the information industries, we have also given thought to the dependence the global economy and societies everywhere have on the electronic infrastructure. ICTs have made our lives immensely more productive in almost every corner of the Earth. Dependence upon ICT brings about its own perils. Loss of communications links can rapidly paralyze everything from transportation to financial systems, and cripple our ability to manage natural disasters. But rapid and effective deployment of ICT resources can significantly speed rescue and recovery efforts.

PTCÍs 2005 Mid-Year Seminar, themed Global Telecommunications in Times of Crises and Turmoil, will bring together some of the worldÍs leading experts on disaster communications. We will attract practitioners in ñall hazardsî planning, specialists that design, manage and operate emergency response systems, command and control facilities, first-responder solutions, and public awareness communications tools. We will draw from prominent end-user organizations that depend on communications to manage responses to powerful storms like the tsunami, earthquakes, man-made disasters and civil emergencies.

The 2005 PTC Mid-Year Seminar, which will be held on 21-22 September in Santa Monica, CaliforniaÍs Sheraton Delfina Hotel, will bring these users and telecom operators together directly for what we hope will be just the start of many useful interchanges of information and viewpoints. A special focus will be on case studies of recent disaster recovery efforts, discussion regarding telecom network resiliency, alternative telecom solutions for disaster warning and recovery, policy issues and telecommunication system sustainability in remote service areas.

Speaking and sponsorship commitments have been received already from Loral Skynet, PanAmSat Corporation, SES Americom, Telenor, Inmarsat and Global Relief Technologies. If you would like to assist or speak at the seminar, please contact Stephen Tom, Sharon Nakama or Claudine Naruse at the PTC Secretariat. Also being evaluated is whether there is interest in small-scale exhibits during the seminar, so please let us know if your organization would like to exhibit.

We look forward to your participation in this most exciting and important event.

Mahalo,

Tim Logue
Chairman
2005 Mid-Year Organizing Committee

A View From the East

Stephen G. Tom

June was a productive and revealing travel month for me as I attended the Broadband World Forum Asia in Yokohama, met with PTC members in Tokyo (including the chapter leadership of PTC Japan), journeyed to Beijing and Shanghai to meet with members and prospective members, participated in the Governor of HawaiiÍs China trade mission, and made a final stop for meetings at CommunicAsia 2005 in Singapore.

I am pleased to report that PTC remains a highly regarded organization in the eyes of telecommunications and ICT professionals in the regions that I visited. Not surprisingly, our annual conference every January remains our flagship program, garnering many compliments and stimulating great yearning in those who know the conference by reputation but have not yet attended. A conference in beautiful Hawaii with thought-provoking sessions, many of the top industry leaders and remarkable networking opportunities is a very attractive package for telecom leaders across Asia seeking to expand their market reach. It was also encouraging to hear that our 2005 Mid-Year Seminar has caught the attention of many in Asia with a theme focusing on Global Telecommunications in Times of Crises and Turmoil.

The take-away value from the trip for me boils down to great feedback about how to improve PTC and numerous ideas about how PTC can best serve our membership. Members highlighted the importance of professional networking; exhibitors suggested that we need to attract more users; and senior executives expressed a desire to address more issues related to trends, corporate strategy and relationship-building. There was also concern about the possibility of increased membership fees and the cost of conference registration. (Please note that we do not anticipate any increases in the coming year.) Additionally, there were those who indicated that PTCÍs mission, vision and purpose (MVP) are not clear. I am pleased to report that a special task force of the Advisory Council has been working with the Board of Governors and myself to develop a clearer MVP statement. You will see this new statement within a month.

Lastly, many members indicated that PTC must find ways to put some real meaning and action behind its mission to improve the human condition in underserved regions throughout the Pacific Hemisphere. Fortunately, it appears that many members have had a role in the recovery effort in Indonesia following the horrific tsunami of 26 December 2004. What is frustrating is that we do not hear about these efforts and cannot share them with the membership. Therefore, please let us know how you and your organization are making a difference through the use of telecommunications and ICT.

New Web Look

If you havenÍt visited the PTC website in a while (www.ptc.org), I hope that you will visit soon. You will find a new graphic look and improved functionality that will make it easier to navigate and use the site. Please let us know what you think of the website and send us any suggestions for further improvements. In the meantime, many thanks to our web designer Isaac Parker (isaac@ptc.org) for the effort, expertise and creativity that went into completing this new design.
