Dear PTC Members,
As the only broad based telecom and ICT membership
organization in the Pacific hemisphere, your membership
in PTC offers you a unique opportunity to see the information
industry in its broadest terms and to observe the trends
that will impact your organization in the years to
come. That is why PTC members come together twice a
year to discuss and learn about the latest developments
in telecom and ICT, and why your Secretariat is working
on ways to extend these interactions and to improve
your access to ideas, resources, and professional colleagues
on a year-round basis via your membership in PTC. Our
strength is in the diversity that we exhibit through
our membership and our programming.
Everyone knows that the business of mining, be it
for coal, salt, silver or gold takes some effort. The
layers near the surface are easy to access; but often
the real payoff is deep in the ground.
Realizing the benefits of membership in PTC is like
mining. You can easily access benefits near the surface
such as a significant discount on registration fees
for the annual conference and exhibition, and for the
Mid-Year Seminar. But there is more. Membership entitles
you to discounts at many telecom and ICT exhibitions,
conferences and seminars held around the world. Likewise,
subscription discounts are offered by many trade publications.
In addition, as a member you have access to PTCÍs member
resources on the web.
However, the deep enduring value of PTC comes through
the professional relationships that you develop at
our meetings and continue to nurture throughout the
year for commercial and non-commercial purposes.
With this value in mind„and because our members are
geographically dispersed throughout 50 or so countries„your
Secretariat is working on a program that will use our
web-based resources to carry on the business of learning,
growing, sharing, and professional networking on a
year-round basis. Watch for these developments over
the coming months. Meanwhile, if you have ideas, expertise
or resources that you can contribute to this effort,
please let me know.
Mahalo,

The PTC / Ngee Ann Polytechnic
Overseas Internship Training Program*
Since 1991, the Pacific Telecommunications Council
has participated in Ngee Ann PolytechnicÍs Overseas
Training Program. Each summer, one or two highly qualified
students from this Singapore institution spend(s) approximately
two months in the PTC Secretariat in Honolulu. PTC
continues to be appreciative of the talents and good
work provided by each of the interns. The testimonial
of our most recent intern, Jocelyn Ho, who was at the
Secretariat from 4 April Æ 20 May 2005 is spotlighted
below in this monthÍs feature report.
Beginning next year, the internship will be extended
to a six-month term.
---------------------
*PTC Member Mark Hukill played a crucial role
in establishing this program on behalf of PTC.
************
The Industrial Training Programme is compulsory during
every Ngee Ann Polytechnic studentÍs course of study,
but to be selected to participate in the Overseas Industrial
Training Programme is definitely an opportunity to
be savored. I was one of the lucky few students to
be selected, and I was elated to discover that I was
to be posted to Honolulu to spend seven weeks at the
Pacific Telecommunications Council (PTC).
Albeit only an intern, the staff at PTC rendered me
their full confidence and entrusted me with responsibilities
within the company. This allowed me to utilize the
skills and knowledge I had learnt in school and to
make it relevant to the industry I hope to enter after
graduation.
During my stay at PTC, I was not limited to a certain
area of work. I was stretched to the limit and worked
in areas such as Public Relations, Marketing and Design.
I take away with me many memorable experiences such
as working with my colleagues on 2005Ís PTC Mid-Year
Seminar and the PTCÍ06 Conference and Exhibition brochures
and flyers, handling the Membership Marketing Project
and of course, the achievement that I am most proud
of, designing the PTCÍ06 Volunteer Poster.
Meeting in the conference room was a weekly affair,
where everyone in the office would gather together
for a discussion session about important issues pertaining
to the company. Despite my position as an intern, my
ideas were not seen as useless and my opinions were
sought on various topics. I could express my ideas
freely without the fear of being dismissed in the eyes
of my colleagues.
I have come to understand that no matter how small
a company may be that it is unwise to doubt its capabilities.
Compromising on quality in any way is not acceptable
at PTC. No matter how much effort and hard work the
employees may have to put in, they would readily do
so to see a project through from start to finish. I
am extremely impressed by PTCÍs high standard of work
and friendly, productive work culture.
Though my stay in Honolulu was brief, the memories
of my internship at PTC will remain impressed on my
mind. No amount of words can describe my gratitude
towards PTC for allowing me this opportunity to learn
and work with them. The employeesÍ patience, advice,
wealth of experience and warm Hawaiian hospitality
have been instrumental in enriching my school life
and I thank them for accepting me as part of their
work family.
Sincerely,
Jocelyn Ho
