Abstract

SK Telecom has achieved sustainable growth and a position of leadership in the Korean mobile communications industry based on twenty years of constant innovation, resulting in such accomplishments as commercialization of the world’s first CDMA system. In an intensely competitive business environment, we have focused on providing differentiated services, and relied on technological leadership and creative marketing approaches to secure the competitive edge of our network.

The telecommunications industry has recently been undergoing immense changes. Boundaries between industries are collapsing and convergence is taking place between wired and wireless communications, broadcasting, finance and other services. While these monumental shifts have opened up tremendous opportunities to grow and diversify into new markets, the trend toward bundling of multiple services has put a squeeze on profit margins. It is therefore crucial that we look at convergence not so much as a simple combining of existing products and services, but as a fundamental restructuring that creates and links entirely new markets.

To ensure our company’s growth in the convergent business environment, SK Telecom is following a Resources & Capabilities-based approach to expand into new domains, and pursuing a Needs-based approach to secure the loyalty and satisfaction of various consumers(individual, corporate and public-sector, etc.) Through these parallel efforts, we will find new business opportunities, cluster business models, and expand our business domain to new industries.

The convergence trend is creating an increasingly complex and uncertain business climate, and the only way to ensure sustainable growth is to broaden our thinking, to find new opportunities, and to exploit new drivers of growth.
