Sunday Morning: Satellite Workshop
News Feed
Satellite Workshop: Integrating Satellite Services into the Cloud: We are undergoing a “reformation” of the satellite industry. Satellite generally serves the business areas of Government systems, broadband satellite services, and commercial networks. Problems for this industry: only a certain number of satellites, slots, transponders, and spectrum that each satellite/company is legally authorized to use. Historically, broadcast was best case where one stream serves infinite consumption. Satellites are not well suited to increasing interactive needs.

There’s a global need to add capacity for rural and isolated areas, satellite may be the only economic option. These days we have new dimensions of value in computing, storage, steel & satellites for delivering Gbps bandwidth. However, fixed satellite services revenues are problematic: broadcast (60%, needs are decreasing) and 30-40% data, needs are increasing), bandwidth value is declining fast. Challenges are based on increased processing speed, storage, and bandwidth needs. Proposed solution: run faster at lower cost. Most companies are not focused on value: service revenue, number of satellites in finite space, bandwidth profiles. For example, applications are 1/3 of total data flow. Unicast-oriented services work well for satellites. Cloud computing offers application delivery over WAN. It’s also possible to use bandwidth instead of storage.
