One of the most prominent topics of discussion at PTC’18 will be the fast-growing and rapidly-changing data center industry. How will operators address the question of sustainability? What kinds of M&As will develop? What about China?

These questions are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the vast amounts of activity happening in the data center industry on a daily basis. With that in mind, we decided to compile some of the most prominent recent data center stories to get you ready for PTC’18.

While it’s not news to most in the industry that the amount of data created worldwide is exploding, environmental concerns are taking center stage in that discussion. Key concerns include how operators can use more green power as well as how to deal with extreme weather incidents brought on by climate change.

While the reliance on data centers is rising steadily across industries and geographies, the way those services are deployed is changing in a number of ways. In particular, fewer and fewer businesses are relying on their previous on-premise solution, instead opting for third-party providers. Edge data centers continue to grow in prominence as well, but myths about them persist.

While many businesses are ditching their on-premise data centers for third-party providers, others, especially hyperscalers like Facebook, are pressing on with their strategy to build more gigantic data center facilities.

Mergers and acquisitions continue to make headlines as well. Iron Mountain’s acquisition of IO Data Centers’ US operations for USD 1.3 billion and Digital Realty’s merger with DuPont Fabros Technology earlier this year are two of the most prominent examples of what has been a record-breaking year in M&As.

Data center managers can count on seeing plenty of changes in the year to come. What do you think will be some of the biggest changes in 2018? While attending PTC’18, be sure to stay on the cutting edge of the data center industry. Mark your calendar for the panels and sessions below!
